South Point 400:
The Round of 8 begins in Las Vegas with the South Point 400. This is a huge race for those still alive in the chase for playoff points, as it represents an opportunity to gain guaranteed entry into the championship race in a few weeks at Phoenix.
This is the second stop of the year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Kyle Larson is looking to sweep the season in Sin City.

2024 NASCAR Cup Series Standings
The last eight left standing have been the best and most consistent drivers throughout the course of the season. It seems only fitting that they are the ones still standing to fight for the championship.
In this round, the top eight had their point totals reset to 4,000 and then the proper bonus points were applied.
Here are the drivers by standings order (bonus points in parentheses):
- Kyle Larson (52)
- Christopher Bell (32)
- Tyler Reddick (29)
- William Byron (23)
- Ryan Blaney (19)
- Denny Hamlin (15)
- Chase Elliott (14)
- Joey Logano (12)
As good as these drivers have been, Larson has two playoff wins and Logano has one, so the “Elite Eight” of NASCAR has only accounted for 50% of the wins in these higher-stakes races.
2024 NASCAR Cup Championship Playoffs Format
There are 10 races in the playoffs, with the first nine grouped into sets of three. A win in one of those races automatically clinches a berth in the next set of races.
The bottom four drivers after each set of three will be eliminated from contention for the championship. Bonus points continue to matter and will be accumulated through the postseason.
