College football schedule Week 4
Week 4 of the college football season brings us undoubtedly the best set of games of the season. We’ve got six Top 25 vs. Top 25 matchups, not to mention Florida State vs. Clemson, where the Seminoles are a top-five team and the Tigers are unranked.

There are also a ton of situational spots to think about with games that are not among the ones that have significant national implications. Travel spots, letdown spots, sandwich spots, rivalry games, those are all among the mix here. It is one of those weeks where those games won’t get a lot of love or a lot of interest, but they have some potentially strong betting angles.

Air Force Falcons (-3.5, 47) at San Jose State Spartans
Friday, 10:30 p.m. ET
This is a really unique spot on Friday night. San Jose State went to Toledo last week and lost 21-17 against the Rockets. Then they flew all the way back home to San Jose to get ready for this week’s Mountain West Conference opener against Air Force. The Falcons run the triple-option and all option attacks have been modified a bit with the rule changes for this season. It is a really tough spot for the Spartans on a short week.
Duke Blue Devils (-21.5, 45.5) at UConn Huskies
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET
Duke has an enormous game coming up in Durham against Notre Dame next week. This week, they’re making the trip up to Connecticut to take on the Huskies. This is the first road game for the Blue Devils and it is to a place that they really never go. I think the biggest thing about this game is that Duke is laying over three touchdowns in this matchup, so it’s a big number to try and cover with one eye likely towards that game against the Fighting Irish.
Central Michigan Chippewas at South Alabama Jaguars (-15, 49.5)
Saturday, 5 p.m. ET
South Alabama knocked off a Power Five team for the first time since 2016 with last week’s win over Oklahoma State. Now the Jaguars are over a two-touchdown favorite this week against Central Michigan with the start of Sun Belt play on the road against James Madison next week. It is not an ideal spot for South Alabama, who is clearly the better team, but may not be fully focused on this week’s opponent. Meanwhile, CMU has lost 72-24 to the two FBS teams that they’ve played to this point, though the first game of the Michigan MAC Trophy rivalry series is next week against Eastern Michigan, so it’s a potential lookahead spot both ways.
Appalachian State Mountaineers at Wyoming Cowboys (-2.5, 43.5)
Saturday, 7 p.m. ET
This is a really intriguing game. Appalachian State plays at the highest elevation east of the Mississippi and Wyoming plays at the highest elevation in all of college football. It is a huge difference in elevation between the two, but at least App State might be a little better prepared for it than other teams. This will be the first game for the Mountaineers outside of North Carolina, as they played a road game against the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill.
Colorado State Rams at Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (-2.5, 53)
Saturday, 7 p.m. ET
This may be the most obvious, and also most challenging spot, of the week, if not the season. Colorado State put everything into that game against Colorado and ultimately lost in an overtime heartbreaker. Now the Rams head to Murfreesboro to take on Middle Tennessee. With long travel off of such an emotionally-charged game, I have no idea what to expect from the Rams here. I do think that the Rams are the better team, even if they are an underdog. But, Jay Norvell’s bunch had to have a hangover from last week’s game, while MTSU played a glorified scrimmage against Murray State.
James Madison Dukes (-6.5, 52.5) at Utah State Aggies
Saturday, 8 p.m. ET
James Madison has played two extremely emotional games back-to-back with a last-minute win over Virginia and a big-time win over Troy in Sun Belt action. Now, they have to go back out of conference and fly from Virginia to Utah to go play in elevation against the Aggies. Utah State is in a state of flux with what looks like a QB change to McCae Hillstrand, as Cooper Legas was benched last week. Still, I feel like it is going to be tough for JMU to overcome what is a brutal spot with the travel, elevation, and an emotional gas tank running low.
New Mexico State Aggies at Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (-3, 58.5)
Saturday, 11:59 p.m. ET
New Mexico State is on the road for the third straight week. The trip to Albuquerque last week wasn’t exactly a long one, but it will still be another week with travel and a little less practice than the Aggies would get if they were staying home. This is also a long trip out to Honolulu, so that’s a bit of a hike for NMSU. It’s also a bit of a hike given that the team flew across the country to Lynchburg, Virginia to face Liberty in Week 2. Compounding the travel spot is that New Mexico State just beat New Mexico in the annual rivalry game by a 27-17 score. The win marked the first time since 2016-17 that the Aggies have a winning streak in the series. This spot seems way better for Hawaii.
