National League Cy Young Award Favorite

Spencer Strider (+550): Blake Snell was the 2023 NL Cy Young Award winner, but Strider was fantastic for the Braves last year. The righty was 20-5 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 2023, and he also struck out an MLB-high 281 batters. The 25-year-old’s swing-and-miss stuff is just outrageous, and his 13.5 K/9 had him first in baseball by a mile. Strider just needs to be a little better situationally. If he can do that, he should cut down on the number of runs he allows and do a better job of impacting winning. And there’s really no reason to believe Strider won’t do that, as he hasn’t even reached his prime yet. That said, it’s completely understandable that Strider is the betting favorite to win this award. However, I’d probably look to go elsewhere in this market. These odds just don’t offer enough value for a season-long wager.

National League Cy Young Award Pick To Win

Zac Gallen (12-1): I wouldn’t hate on anybody that decides to bet Strider, Wheeler or Webb. However, I’m looking for better payouts with season-long futures. With that in mind, I’m jumping on Gallen to win the Cy Young Award. The 2023 season wasn’t necessarily Gallen’s best, but the righty still finished seventh in the league in WAR. He has now been a top-10 pitcher in the league when it comes to WAR in back-to-back seasons. Gallen was also uncharacteristically lousy in road games last year. After going 6-3 with a 2.59 ERA in 16 road starts in 2022, Gallen was just 5-6 with a 4.42 ERA in 18 road starts in 2023. So, if the truth is somewhere in between and Gallen continues to be lights out at Chase Field, the 28-year-old should be right back in the Cy Young mix. That’s all you can ask for at these odds.

National League Cy Young Award Long Shot

Walker Buehler (40-1): After a 2021 season in which Buehler went 16-4 with a 2.47 ERA and 212 strikeouts, he was just 6-3 with a 4.02 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 65.0 innings in 2022. Buehler’s 2022 season was also cut short for elbow surgery, and that forced him out of the 2023 season. Buehler has now had Tommy John twice in his career, but he is already facing live hitting and he’s only 29 years old. So, as long as Buehler is starting games early in the season, I can’t get behind seeing these types of odds next to his name. Buehler is a two-time All-Star and a 2020 World Series champion. He also pitched extremely well in some of Los Angeles’ biggest games.

Unfortunately, the weight of being the Dodgers ace during some very successful years put strain on his arm. And Buehler’s overall stuff suffered because of it. But now that the elbow has been repaired, I don’t see any reason he can’t get back to being one of the top starters in the National League. He’s also playing for a Los Angeles team that is a heavy favorite to win the World Series. That should come with plenty of wins. With those wins comes a spotlight. So, if Buehler does come close to recapturing some of his magic, people will take notice.
