Saturday Best Bets results
Saturday was another fun day in and out of the Tuley’s Takes home office – but this time we had better results with our MLB plays.
After filing “Team Tuley’s Thoroughbred Takes” after Saturday’s early scratches, I headed down to the Treasure Island race and sportsbook for the “Wager and Win” horse racing tournament, which is a qualifying event for the National Horseplayers Championship (held next March at the Horseshoe, formerly Bally’s, on the Las Vegas Strip).

I’ve already qualified this year by beating more than 2,300 contestants in an online qualifier at horseplayers.com back in April, but I’m trying to earn the maximum two entries to the finals. This Saturday/Sunday contest requires 15 mythical $2 Win and Place wagers each day from the races at Saratoga, Monmouth and Del Mar.
In the second play on Saturday, I had a 17-1 winner at Monmouth that paid $36 to Win and $13 to Place for 49 contest points. I was in 6th place for the first half of the day, but was unable to find another winner, so I enter Sunday’s round with the same score and 15 plays left.
I had an even better day on the diamond as I went 2-0 with a Chicago sweep of my Best Bets on the White Sox First 5 Innings -105 vs. the Guardians and Cubs First 5 Innings +100 at the Cardinals.
The White Sox led 3-0 through 5 innings and also cashed the First 3 line at 1-0 and the full-game moneyline at 7-2. Likewise, the Cubs led 4-1 through 5 innings while also leading 2-1 after First 3 and 5-1 on the full-game moneyline to again win no matter how we played them.
Our official Best Bets on the First 5 plays went 2-0 for a net profit of $195.24 based on $100 flat bets, according to the VSiN Pro Picks page, as we improved slightly to 20-33-5 in July for a net loss of $974.76.

Cubs First 5 Innings +115 at Cardinals: The Cubs have won 8 straight games to get back over .500 at 53-51 and into the playoff chase. Meanwhile, the Cardinals have underachieved all season at 46-60, yet inexplicably still come up favored. Can anyone explain why Chicago’s Kyle Hendricks (4-4, 3.45 ERA) is this big of a dog vs. St. Louis’ Steven Matz (1-7, 4.34 ERA)? In the meantime, I’ll take it.
Tigers First 5 Innings +130 at Marlins: The Tigers had been playing better before going on a 4-game losing streak that they snapped Saturday to make this a “mini-swagger play.” We respect Miami pitcher Jesus Luzardo (8-5, 3.22 ERA) but don’t think he should be favored this much over Detroit’s Tarik Skubal (1-1, 3.71 ERA).
