Lions have won five of six to get into Wild Card hunt
“Math majors make great play callers.”
That quote from Michael Lombardi is about Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who is getting a lot of credit for the unbelievable turnaround from Detroit this season (and was a math major at North Carolina). Jared Goff not only looks like an NFL quarterback, but one of the better ones in the league and the Lions have scored 19 rushing touchdowns, trailing only the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys.

What are the other contributing factors to the Lions’ success? Is it sustainable? Could this be a playoff team? Take it away, Patrick Meagher and Michael Lombardi:
That segment from Monday’s edition of The Lombardi Line heaped tons of much due praise on the Lions, Johnson, Goff, the offensive line and the job that Dan Campbell is doing. Campbell, by the way, went from 100/1 to win Coach of the Year at Caesars to +750 after the win over the Minnesota Vikings to improve to 6-7.
Detroit Lions playoff chances & schedule
The Lions are 1.5 games behind the freefalling New York Giants for the final playoff spot and the same distance behind the Washington Commanders for the No. 6 seed. Detroit is still a pretty big underdog to make the playoffs per DraftKings Sportsbook, with the ‘Yes’ at +300 and the ‘No’ at -400. Still, they’re in the discussion after a 1-6 start and you can’t ask for more than that.
The remaining schedule for the Lions features three road games, but every game is winnable:
Week 15 at New York Jets
Week 16 at Carolina Panthers
Week 17 vs. Chicago Bears
Week 18 at Green Bay Packers
The Lions are lined at pick ‘em this week against the Jets. They’ll be a road favorite at Carolina and a home favorite against the Bears. The Week 18 game against the Packers is a major toss-up at this point, given that we don’t know what the scenarios will be for each team.
You can bet that Michael and Patrick will be keeping an eye on this situation and so will our other VSiN hosts and guests, so listen live or watch live when you can to hear their latest thoughts.
