Tennessee Titans 2024 Predictions and Odds:

There is a new regime in Nashville as Brian Callahan replaces Mike Vrabel as head coach. Callahan will also be the offensive play-caller for the first time, as will his defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, who was the defensive backs coach for the Baltimore Ravens last season. Callahan will turn to his father Bill as the offensive line coach. That offensive line will be in front of second-year quarterback Will Levis as the Titans look to find out if he is the guy going forward. With Vrabel no longer in the fold, executive vice president/general manager Ran Carthon is now officially in charge of the reset in Tennessee. 

Offense

The Titans’ offense has been anemic for the last couple years but nearly bottomed out last year as it ranked 28th in total offense, 29th in passing offense, 28th in scoring offense, and 28th in third down conversions. Callahan wants more explosive plays from this group and brought in one of his former players Tyler Boyd from Cincinnati to go along with new signee Calvin Ridley (Jacksonville) and the steady DeAndre Hopkins. Treylon Burks, the 2022 first-rounder who came back in return in the terrible trade that sent A.J. Brown to Philadelphia, has missed 12 games in two seasons and could be the odd man out.

While Levis gets some receiving help, the offensive line, which ranked dead last per PFF, has to get better in a hurry after allowing an NFL-worst 49 sacks last year. Alabama’s J.C. Latham was drafted seventh overall to go along with last year’s first-rounder Peter Skoronski. Lloyd Cushenberry (Denver) should be an immediate upgrade at center. 

Derrick Henry is now in Baltimore and the TItans will go with a 1-2 punch at running back with Tony Pollard (Dallas) and second-year man Tyjae Spears. 

Defense

One problem that Wilson’s defense should not have is physicality starting in the secondary. Tennessee traded for L’Jarius Sneed from the Super Bowl champion Chiefs and signed Chidobe Awuzie from Cincinnati. 

Jeffery Simmons is one of the best and most versatile defensive tackles in the game. He and the defensive front will miss Denico Autry (Houston), but drafted a talented player in Outland Trophy winner T’Vondre Sweat (Texas) who can be a difference maker but had some ‘red flags’ that dropped him into the second round. Harold Landry is still productive and had 10.5 sacks last year, but Arden Key will have to provide more consistent play. 

Most of the scheme will remain the same but with a higher rate of blitzing. 

Outlook

Tennessee has failed far too often on recent draft picks, so that is why they had to be bigger players in free agency this past offseason. They should be better on both sides of the ball but they do have two first-time play-callers and there are always some growing pains in that situation.

Levis has a strong arm and a good release, but did struggle with accuracy and decision-making in his nine starts (3-6) as a rookie and was behind a porous offensive line. 

While the Titans do play a last-place schedule this season, keep in mind that three of the last-place teams that they play are the Bengals, the Jets, and the Chargers, who are all expected to be substantially better this year. This could be a team that starts slow but improves late in the season.
