Panthers vs. Bears Spread

The Bears are coming off back-to-back losses to teams that are firmly in the postseason mix, but they’ll now get a crack at Bryce Young and a one-win Panthers team. Last week, Young threw three interceptions in a 27-13 loss to the Colts, which was disappointing considering Indianapolis had allowed an average of 38.0 points per game in its previous three games. That makes it hard to believe in Young turning things around here, even against a Bears team that is just 30th in the NFL in Defensive DVOA. And the Bears now have Montez Sweat to put pressure on Young from the outside. Chicago traded a second-round pick for Sweat two weeks ago and then signed him to a four-year extension worth $98 million.

This is also a very good matchup for the Bears offense. Sure, Chicago’s passing game has been up and down this season, which has a lot to do with Justin Fields’ health. But Charlotte is last in the league in Defensive DVOA against the run. So, the Bears should be able to pound away with D’Onta Foreman, Roschon Johnson and potentially Khalil Herbert, who looks like he is set to return from an ankle injury for this game. And if Chicago is picking up chunk yardage on the ground, the big plays in the passing game will come — especially with DJ Moore working against his former team. Moore will want to produce in a big way against the team that traded him. And Tyson Bagent, who looks like he will be starting this game, hasn’t been nearly as bad as you’d think under center. Look for him to get the ball to Moore with regularity, while also targeting tight end Cole Kmet quite a bit.

It’s also just hard to ignore that the Panthers are 0-4 both straight-up and against the spread on the road this year. So, it’s hard to see this game not going the way of the Bears, who have more talent and a home-field advantage.

Panthers vs. Bears Total

I’m normally pretty quick to play the Under on a game involving two lousy offenses, but these defenses are also miserable. And this number is extremely low, making it more tempting to play the Over than the Under. It’s obviously going to be hard to figure out where the offense will come from in a game like this, but I don’t think it’s crazy to expect a big offensive performance from Chicago here. The Bears’ strengths on that side of the ball make them a threat to exploit the Panthers’ weaknesses on defense.

The Over has also hit in three of the four road games the Panthers have played this year, which shows you that Carolina’s defense doesn’t travel well. The Over also happens to be 3-0 when the Bears have been favored under Matt Eberflus, and it’s also 8-5 in the 13 games they have played at home under him.

Bryce Young Over 9.5 Rushing Yards

Young isn’t anything close to a running quarterback, but he is actually pretty good with his legs. So, while he doesn’t opt to take off very often, he can pick up yards in bunches when he does. Young is actually coming off a 41-yard performance against the Colts last week, and it looks like he is realizing that his legs can be a good option for him when the protection breaks down. Young has also rushed for at least 10 yards in five of the seven games he has played this season, so he is pretty regularly reaching the double-digit mark in rushing yards. With that in mind, I like him to do it again against the Bears. This can be a leaky defense, so he should see some green in front of him a few times.

Panthers vs. Bears Prediction

This is a game that could be tough to watch, but it might be a good one to bet. I think this is a great spot for a Chicago team that I believe is a bit better than its record. So, I’ll happily lay the points against a Panthers team that is 31st in the league in Offensive DVOA.

Lean: Bears -3.5
