Tennis best bets and predictions for ATP Toronto and WTA Montreal – Tuesday, August 8th

The US Open is just about a month away, which means tennis season is really heating up. There will be a lot of big tournaments over the next couple of weeks, so VSiN is here to provide you with tennis best bets as often as possible. With that in mind, keep reading to get my picks for Tuesday, August 8th. This week, the focus is on the National Bank Open in Toronto and Omnium National Bank in Montreal — two 1000-level events. I’ll look to make picks on both the men and the women, and I’ll probably be adding more to these columns each day. So, make sure you refresh for more picks — or click the link below for the Pro Picks page.

Gabriel Diallo vs. Daniel Evans

This match doesn’t have much to do with what I think of these two players. If this one was being played later in the week, I’d strongly prefer Evans. The Brit is just the far superior player in this matchup. However, I do think Evans will struggle to find the motivation to win this match after having just won the Citi Open on Sunday. That was probably the biggest win of Evans’ career, and he’s surely the type to go out and have some fun afterwards. With that in mind, I don’t really trust him with the quick turnaround.

It’s also worth noting that Diallo did beat Evans when the two met in the Surbiton Challenger in June. That was a grass-court match and Diallo came away with a convincing 7-5, 6-2 victory. So, the Canadian should have the confidence he needs to pull this one out. And it doesn’t hurt that the crowd will be urging him on to do so.

Overall, it’s never easy to bet against a player that is as hot as Evans, but there’s a lot working against the Brit. So, it’s hard to turn down these plus-money odds.

Bet: Diallo ML (+150 – 1.5 units)

Aslan Karatsev vs. Mackenzie McDonald

It’s a little wild to me that Karatsev is going off at plus-money odds against McDonald. I fully understand that McDonald has a better ranking, and I can see an argument for the American having a higher floor as a performer. But Karatsev’s best tennis is much, much better than McDonald’s, and the Russian has been in decent form recently.

Karatsev might have lost to Frances Tiafoe in straight sets at the Citi Open, but that was a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) victory for the American. Both players played at an extremely high level in that match, but Tiafoe came up with a few points that mattered more. Still, Karatsev feels like he’s bound for a big hard-court season after that showing. And I think he’ll get himself a win over McDonald here.

Karatsev’s ability to return serves should be the difference in this one. The Russian is one of the best returners on tour, and McDonald only holds at 77.3% to begin with. So, as long as Karatsev’s serve doesn’t fall off a cliff, he should get this one.

Bet: Karatsev ML (+110 – 2 units)
